Experienced in dealing with Clients as well as the Regulator, Rating Agencies and Board members, he has strong technical capability in Commercial Banking in areas of Commercial Credit, Trade Finance, Operational Risk and Compliance. A passion for integrated Risk Management, Corporate / Risk Culture & talent development. Having held C-Suite positions, his technical capability is backed by strategic and broader leadership abilities. He also has extensive experience in revenue assurance, managing revenue leakage, and governance.
Previously as Bank ABC Group GRO (and member of the MANCOM) He was responsible for enterprise-wide risk oversight that involved leadership of approximately a 120-member strong team between the Head Office and in country risk functions in all subsidiaries and branches (UK, Brazil, USA, Egypt, Jordan, Algeria and Tunisia). There was a significant shared transformation agenda (inorganic growth-related work, growth planned in new markets, rebranding of the bank, introduction of DCM business). Operational Risk as a discipline grew significantly at that time along with a clear focus on risk / organisational culture.
At ABN Amro, he was the Chief Risk Officer. He was responsible for Transaction Banking products (cash management and payments as well as trade finance) for corporates and Financial Institutions. This strategic position managed an integrated risk offering for the business. Building this unit from scratch involved setting up the full governance, aligning it with Group Risk as well as designing (business led) product approval committees and putting in place necessary processes and capabilities to support the business in line with Group Risk philosophy and boundaries. By its very nature this business was mostly exposed to operational risk, and focussed on improving areas of transparency, Change Risk Assessment (New Product Approvals), Self-assessments etc. In parallel, with the takeover of ABN Amro by RBS – He headed up the global operational risk function of the combined entity for its payments and trade business.
He spent a couple of years as head of the Middle Eastern arm of Moody’s Analytics global Learning business, tasked to oversee the market, client and product strategy. His intimate knowledge of this region, as well as of the common gaps in these markets allowed him to design not only simple tactical risk training responses for banks’ needs, but also strategic longer-term blended programmes for larger or smaller banks. During this period, he also taught occasionally, delivering lectures on Credit and Operational Risk to all levels.
